This year’s successful Korea Policy Institute Walkathon took place on November 5th, 2016 at Lake Merritt in Oakland, California.
Our 9th Annual Walkathon’s proceeds will go to support Bay Area teach-ins on the need to stop the U.S.– South Korea war games, to stop the deployment of the THAAD missile system in South Korea and end militarization of the Asia and Pacific regions; and to end the Alameda County support of Urban Shield, an annual event promoting the militarization of the police force and the deployment of tools of war in our communities.
One teach-in is planned for January 14, 2017 at the Eastside Arts Alliance (www.eastsideartsalliance.com) and another will be in March (date and venue TBD), to coincide with the installation of a new U.S. administration, and the traditional start up of the annual U.S.-Korea war games. Either main party candidate will pose major challenges to peace abroad, and at home. This walkathon is one step towards the goal of education and peace.
Supporters joined members of the Korean drumming group, Ieumsae, with banners and signage on a 2 lap, 6.4 walkathon around the lake.
